Storage Checklist Countdown to Moving Into Storage

3 months before

  • Terminate your rental agreement 
    Let your landlord know about the move if you are in rented accommodation.
  • Arrange school transfer
    Arrange your childs transfer to their new school if necessary.
  • Check your documents
    If travelling, check the expiration date of your travel and visa documents.

2 months before

  • Book Now We’re Moving to take your belongings to storage.
  • Check insurance policies (home contents, goods in transit, storage insurance)
    If you own especially valuable goods, take them for a value estimate for insurance purposes.
  • Take measurement thoroughly measure your new home: see if your old furniture, carpets, curtains etc. will still fit or buy new ones if needed. Make sure larger pieces of furniture will fit through the doors. Purge if necessary.
  • Arrange temporary accommodation
    Make sure you arrange for temporary accommodation if your new home is not ready on the day of your move.

1 month before

  • Let the following know about your change of address: utility providers (electricity, gas, phone…), bank, post, doctors, your employer, TV subscription, deliveries etc…
  • The Royal Mail offers a mail forwarding service.
  • Arrange subscriptions
    Arrange the internet, phone and TV subscription for your new home.
  • Sort & purge, go through each room of your property & decide what you need to keep & what you can get rid of. (the attic is a good place to start!)
  • Purchase moving boxes & packing supplies like packing paper, bubble wrap, tape etc. (We sell or ‘rent’ the boxes, whichever suits your situation best)
  • If you’re packing yourself, begin with stuff that you use the least. Make sure you label the boxes. (We also offer a packing service) Add items of special value such as jewellery, Passports, Medication & important documents to a safe box that you’ll personally transport to your new home.

2 weeks before

  • Arrange time off work for removal day.
  • If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to take them to school (kids that is) or look after them during the move.
  • Go through your food supplies and throw away everything that has passed its expiry date.
  • Contact us (or Now We’re Moving) Re-confirm the arrangements with us, just to keep in touch.
  • If required, arrange parking permits for the removal van(s)
  • Start dismantling larger items of furniture.

1 week before

  • Move into storage
    If you have booked extra storage space, this is the time to move your stuff to your storage unit. (We can also do this on the day of your move, if the volume and distance isn’t too great)
    Check out Now We’re Storing’s (Storage tips) to make the most out of your storage pod/unit.
  • Make an appointment to collect the keys to your new property.
  • Contact a cleaning company for a thorough cleaning of your new home or ask friends if they can help you with it.
  • Aim to finish your general packing a few days before moving day.
    Pack suitcases for everyone in the family with enough clothes to wear for however long you need.

Couple of days before

  • Empty the fridge & defrost the refrigerator.
  • Reconfirm our arrival time & other details if required.
    Provide exact, written directions to your new home. Include contact information, especially your mobile phone number.

Moving day!

  • Let the movers deal with everything – We are the professionals! just have tea & coffee (and biscuits) available for the staff’s energy all day!
  • Direct them where you want your items to go , whether it’s in the new property or where you’d like it positioned in the storage unit.
